Cecilia Thompson has never visited Alaska but everywhere she goes people tell her how closely she resembles the state’s most famous resident.
Thompson, a graduate of Pickering Junior High and Lynn English High School, is a look-a-like to former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
The minute Sarah Palin was introduced as McCain’s running mate in August, 2008, Thompson’s phone started ringing.
“As soon as John McCain picked her, my friends, family, and co-workers were calling from all across the country,” recalled Thompson. “They all basically said the same thing, ‘that lady running for vice president looks just like you.”’
Thompson wears glasses, usually has her hair in a bun, and is about the same height (5-4 1/2) as Palin. Aware that many people consider the Alaska governor an attractive political figure, Thompson said, “When people say I look like her, I take it as a compliment.”
Inundated with “Sarah” references every day, Thompson decided in August, 2009, to attend a celebrity look-a-like convention in Florida.
“I went to the convention and I had a blast,” said Thompson. “I met look-a-likes, from Elvis Presley to Robin Williams to Cher to Barbra Streisand, to President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.”
Thompson returned from the convention and began to take the stage at open microphone comedy nights doing a Sarah Palin routine.
“I was just dabbling in it, but now more and more people are asking me to come to parties and fundraisers,” said Thompson.
Has Thompson met the world’s most famous hockey mom? You betcha.
Last December, Thompson attended a Sarah Palin book signing in Colorado.
“I just went there to see her in person,” said Thompson. “She shook my hand and said to me, ‘Oh my gosh, I feel like I’m looking in the mirror.”
A photograph was taken of Thompson and Palin together at the bookstore and it appeared in a popular German magazine, Der Spiegel.
Thompson has seen professional actress Tina Fey’s portrayal of Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live. “Tina Fey is amazing in her imitation of her,” said Thompson.
And now Thompson is poised to begin a new career as a celebrity look-a-like. She was the featured surprise guest at an entrepreneurial convention in Waltham and was a huge hit.
“Everybody – men and women – wanted to take a picture with me,” said Thompson, who wore a replica of Palin’s signature red dress to the event and gave a 15-minute speech replete with props.
Thompson, who formerly worked at General Electric, has an Associate’s Degree from North Shore Community College and took courses at Northeastern University and Lesley College before getting married and relocating to Colorado.
She resumed her studies at Colorado Christian University and received a degree in Organizational Management. While living in Colorado, Thompson worked in corporate positions and was a part-time professional ski instructor, but she has recently returned to the North Shore for an extended visit with family.
