Woman Dies; Man Survives Accident on Fox Hill Bridge

A grey Mercedes SUV driven by a Dorchester man was crossing the Fox Hill Bridge heading south out of Lynn when it struck a barrier, careened across the roadway, hit a traffic gate and then literally flew into the Saugus River early in the morning Monday.

The SUV slid under water.

Moments later, Lynn Police responding to the accident dove into the river and pulled from the SUV the driver and his woman passenger.

According to police, Gerardo Brito, 60, was given CPR at the scene by Officers Kelly Alyward, Micahel Crosby and Joshua Hilton. He was then driven by EMT’s to Union Hospital for emergency medical treatment. He was later removed to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He is expected to survive.

His passenger, a woman who remains unidentified, died at the scene. She was pronounced dead at Salem Hospital.

Fire Lt. Hughes and Charles Stewart made heroic efforts to free the woman from the submerged vehicle but were unable to free her.
