Ronald Bennett

Retired Lithographer, Saugus School Custodian and Excellent Athlete

Ronald P. Bennett of Saugus died in Blueberry Hill Nursing Home on December 10 after a long illness. He was 83 years old.

Born in Chelsea, the husband of Florence (LeBlanc) Bennett and the son of Walter and Stella (Marchand) Bennett, he was raised in Revere and has been a Saugus resident since 1958.

While at IC (Immaculate Conception?) High School, he excelled in baseball, football and basketball having been voted into several All Star teams and also played in a playoff game in Fenway Park. He also played outstanding hockey for the CYO teams. He was also a bowler of note and he and his son, Paul, were featured in a play off match against each other on Candle Pin Bowling Tourney on TV, a first for the TV program. Later in life, he was an avid horse shoe player and he and his son were known as the Killer “B’s. All told, he was an excellent athlete.

He worked as a lithographer for 21 years with Forbes and Buck Printing, then as a custodian with the Saugus School System from 1977 until retiring 20 years ago. He also spent 14 years with the US Army Reserves. He enjoyed his family, playing cards and greyhound racing.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Paul Bennett of Saugus and Gary Bennett of Lynn and by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend his funeral  from the St. Laurent Funeral Home, 554 Western Avenue, Lynn on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in Blessed Sacrament Church, Saugus, at noon. Burial will be in St. Jean’s Cemetery, Lynn. Visiting hours in the funeral home are today, Tuesday, from 3 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that donations be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Fund.

Ramon Martinez-Rivera

Of Lynn, formerly of Puerto Rico

Ramon L. Martinez-Rivera of Lynn, formerly of Puerto Rico, died on December 7 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 70 years old.

A former construction worker, born in Dorado Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Francisco and Petra (Rivera);  the beloved husband of Elena Cruz; devoted father of Dalys Martinez-Cruz of New York, Julio Martinez-Cruz of Puerto Rico, Maria Martinez-Cruz of Lynn, Rigoberto Martinez-Cruz of Fall River and Saul and Joel Martinez-Cruz, both of Lynn; dear brother of Manuel, Alicia, Francisco, Geraldo, Glenda, Evelyn and the late Juan and Rafael Martinez-Cruz and is also survived by 15 loving grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in the Paul Buonfiglio & Sons-Bruno Funeral Home, 128 Revere St., Revere, today, Tuesday, December 11 at 12 (noon). Relatives and friends are kindly invited at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery Lynn. For guest book please visit www.Buonfiglio.com.

Christine ‘Tina’ Sorrenti

Of Malden, formerly of Everett

Christine ‘Tina’ (Garofano) Sorrenti of Malden, formerly of Everett, died on December 3. She was the beloved wife of the late John J. and was the 12th child born of a loving family of 15. She was the daughter of the late Euplio and Tomasina (Pizzano) Garofano. She is survived by her beloved sister in law Ann McGee of Lynn and was predeceased by her beloved brothers and sisters in law of the Sorrenti family. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
