Friends of Lynn and Nahant Beach Award $4,000 Grant to Lynn Schools

The Friends of Lynn and Nahant Beach have awarded a $4,000 grant to the Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center in Nahant to help bring the ocean to students in several Lynn elementary schools.  The grant more than doubles the financial support the Friends have provided to the science center since 2014.

Lynn schools selected for assistance are Aborn, Brickett, Harrington and Hoods, which are those closest to the ocean.

“Educating the next generation about the importance of the ocean and our beaches is a priority for us,” said Friends President Bob Tucker. “The Friends are committed to working with groups like the Northeastern University Marine Science Center to help Lynn kids appreciate the jewel at our shores.”

“We are so pleased to have the support of the Friends,” said NU Marine Science Center outreach program coordinator Carole McCauley.  “This grant will allow us to enhance environmental literacy in Lynn elementary schools by providing hands-on marine education activities that help students understand and appreciate the local environment.

McCauley said joining forces with the Friends enables the science center to address the mutual goals of promoting environmental stewardship in the local community, as well as supporting Lynn Public Schools’ efforts to provide meaningful STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) enrichment at all levels. “By investing in our youth, the Friends are helping to mold the next generation of environmental stewards,” she said.

The Friends of Lynn & Nahant Beach is a nonprofit organization founded in 1990 to improve the Lynn shores and Nahant Beach state reservations.  The Friends have partnered with residents, elected officials, and the state parks department on: capital improvement projects such as the construction of a new bathhouse, the refurbishment and re-opening of the Ward Bathhouse, and the reconstruction of the Nahant Causeway infrastructure; an annual summertime concert series that attracts thousands; and educational activities in Lynn Public Schools.

“We are very grateful for the support of the Friends of Lynn & Nahant Beach and the partnership with the Northeastern Marine Science Center,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Catherine C. Latham. “Thanks to this generous grant, our elementary school students will have the opportunity to develop a greater understanding and appreciation for the ocean – a natural resource in their own community.”
